Summer 2009 Update

June 23rd, 2009 _JW 1 comment

Blogging regularly is extremely difficult. Sometimes, life is just too damn busy sometimes for someone to take a minute and express themselves in writing. However, I’d like to think that writing improves and even validates your thoughts. So I have a new goal — Write an entry at least once a week.

I guess most people will consider me an extremely geeky individual when it comes to technology because I do it for both a hobby and profession, therefore my entries will be heavily based upon technical topics.

What am I thinking about nowdays?

  • JOGL/Swing/SWT performance.
  • Eucalyptus cluster (not E-book reader for the iPhone).
  • Cross-platform compatibility.
  • RESTful web services and state management via Java.

What about Projection?

All of the above baby. It’s coming. But work definitely takes priority in my life. Luckily Projection isn’t being conceived elsewhere. The idea is everywhere, but the tricky part is working with all of the technologies that comes into play. Making them play nicely isn’t an easy task.

What’s the reward and why am I doing it? I see it as a compliment to the online experience that I’d like. Presence on the Internet should be a lot more flexible and span across more services.

Moved to Linode. Better quality VPS hosting.

I have some new things planned for this server. Good things and of course random things. *snicker*

Server Upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04

May 5th, 2009 _JW No comments

Here’s what I did -

Make sure you have everything updated in your 8.04 or 8.10 release:

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

Install update-manager-core:

$ sudo apt-get install update-manager-core

Do upgrade:

$ sudo do-release-upgrade

Worked via remote VPS, with kernel upgrade and everything.

Textmate Blogging

March 15th, 2009 _JW No comments

Test blog from Textmate bundle. It’s crazy but I think Textmate might end up being a great platform for posting to the blog. It uses the standard XML-RPC protocol and it should work with all popular blogging platforms such as Wordpress, Movable Type, Blogger, etc.

New Year’s Resolution

January 3rd, 2009 _JW No comments

Goals:

  • Multi-platform GUI Programming and Testing
  • Projection in use
  • More Ruby and Rails
  • Startup funding
  • Tightly knit community development server with continuous integration
  • Being even more technical
  • Technical writing

My biggest goal is to push Projection to a point where it can be worked on in collaboration. Being that the plugin architecture will play a key role in the potential of the app. The features that I’m promising will beat the living daylights out of current IM clients, but only if implementation is impeccable. It’s almost hilarious how much of the success is due to talent in code and not in higher level things.

Hackers run the show. YCombinator’s about page writes the truth. Real talk kids.

Why are we so flexible? Not (just) because we’re nice people. We realize that, as it gets cheaper to start a company, the balance of power is shifting from investors to hackers. We think the way of the future is simply to offer hackers the best possible deal.

Happy New Year everyone!

PS: If you were expecting a more leisure/hobby type new year’s resolution, those goals are obviously around as well. However, they’re way more spontaneous and not as important as professional goals!

Upgrade to 10.5.6

December 16th, 2008 _JW No comments

WTF, I got this crazy clean installation of 10.5.5 and 10.5.6 gets rolled out a few days later. This is insanity. From 10.5.2 to 10.5.5 was a nightmare. I used to have to hack kext files, inject EFI strings, install different kernels, etc just to get things to work correctly.

However, this time wasn’t much of a pain at all. Apple Software Update ran with no problems. Restarted 2 times (for who knows what reason). Everything works well. 10.5.6 upgraded via the previous post about the installation of 10.5.5.

The OSX86 community is so awesome!
